  • 'It's a great feeling starting to run through a big city where there isn't any traffic. On the day the only vehicles allowed in the centre are the trams.'
  • 'It's always tricky at the beginning when there are a lot of people near you. I really have to rely on Mac, particularly on the corners.'
  • 'There was a bit round the industrial area in Elevator Road when I caught the smell of something - I think it was detergent.'
  • 'They were still building the Beetham Tower when we were here last. When Mac and I did the New York City Run the staff at the Empire State Building let us jump the queue to go up. Mind you, of course, they left me sitting on a windowsill when they looked at the view.'
  • 'The best thing at the finish is the sound of the crowd cheering you on. On one run I could hear someone banging something towards the end. Later on I found out that it was someone with a frying pan.'

Look 07 is now inviting runners to send their own sports pictures to Look 07 by the 1st May 2007. There are prizes for the best photographs and a chance to see your work online. Find out more

In 2008 'Blind Dave' Heeley and his guide-runner ‘Mad Mac’ Carr will take on the extraordinary challenge of running seven marathons in seven continents in seven consecutive days. They are doing it to raise sponsorship for Guide Dogs for the Blind and will run the final marathon in London with Sir Ranulph Fiennes, the only other person to have completed the challenge.

To help launch the project Andrew used Dave’s memories of the route to create a series of triptychs in which he has combined naturalistic colour photographs of the locations with black and white images that record the runner’s impressions.
